We can already tell that winter is just around the corner. Now is a great time to have your winter tires installed on your Volkswagen as the weather outside gets colder and the first snow is getting ready to fall. That said, you may be wondering if you need to replace your current set of winter tires. If you are not sure, the following tips will help you make that determination.
Check the tread depth
To be effective, your winter tires have to have a tread depth of at least 4.8 mm when you install them at the beginning of winter. Tires lose their effectiveness when the tread depth is less than 4 mm, but if you want your tires to last all winter long on your Volkswagen, having a tread depth of 4.8 mm is the minimum at the start of the season.
To determine the tread depth of your winter tires, you can use a special tool or you can also check to see if the wear indicator on your winter tire is still visible. You can also put a quarter in one of the treads with the caribou’s nose down. If can still see the nose of the caribou, your tires probably need to be replaced.
How did they perform last winter?
Think back to how your winter tires handled winter last year. Ultimately, how your winter tire behaves is a great indicator of quality and if you felt like your winter tires were having a tough time dealing with snow and ice towards the end of last winter, you will want to replace them regardless of how deep the tread depth is. The most important thing is that you are confident and feel safe on the road.
How old are they?
We would strongly recommend that if you’ve had the same winter tires on your Volkswagen for three or four years, you have them replaced regardless. Even if your current set of winter tires still have a little bit of tread left, we are sure you’ll be amazed by the effectiveness and performance of modern and new winter tire technology. Most winter tires are not designed to go over four years or over 30,000 kilometres.
