Volkswagen Canada has unveiled its 2024 Golf GTI 380, marking the grand finale of manual transmission in its iconic "hot hatch." Exclusive to North America, the special edition pays tribute to its heritage, with the "380" nomenclature inspired by the vehicle’s internal model code, reminiscent of the 2002 fourth-generation “337” edition.
The GTI 380 comes in two versions: "Autobahn" and "Performance". Both flaunt exclusive exterior designs, notably 19-inch gloss black multi-spoke aluminum-alloy wheels with summer performance tires. Complementing this are a gloss black roof and mirror caps, creating a bold contrast with the GTI's traditional red exterior detailing. Exclusive paint options for this edition include Pomelo Yellow Metallic and Dolphin Gray Metallic, in addition to Deep Black Pearl, Kings Red Metallic, and Oryx White Pearl.
Inside, the GTI 380 showcases its lineage. The "Autobahn" trim features the signature Scalepaper Plaid cloth seats and honeycomb patterns. Those opting for the "Performance" trim are treated to Vienna leather seating surfaces, though they can switch to Scalepaper Plaid upon request. As a nod to GTI tradition, the golf-ball inspired manual shift knob is retained in the 380 editions.
Powering the GTI 380 is a turbocharged 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine, delivering 241 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. Worth noting, this is the last hurrah for the 6-speed manual in the Golf GTI lineup, with future iterations exclusively featuring the dual-clutch DSG transmission. Speaking of which, the DSG-equipped GTI comes in three trims for the 2024 model year, priced from $34,795.
Set to hit Canadian dealerships this upcoming fall, the Golf GTI 380 starts at $36,895. As a side note for manual enthusiasts, 2024 also draws the curtain on manual transmissions for the Golf R and Jetta. However, Jetta's sportier sibling, the Jetta GLI, will continue to sport a three-pedal version beyond 2024.
